El avance tecnológico ha abierto un mundo de posibilidades en aviónica para todo tipo de aeronave, logrando incorporar nuevas capacidades al avión. En la aviación, la necesidad de mejorar la gestión de la navegación en el espacio aéreo, con nuevos sistema de guiado y navegación, así como controlar de manera segura las aeronaves han sido el motor de la evolución de la aviónica. Pero, ¿qué es la aviónica?. Es la aplicación de la electrónica a la aviación o a los sistemas de las aeronaves, es decir, todos aquellos sistemas electrónicos, tanto en sistemas de comunicación como indicadores y sus elementos de manejo.
La aviónica ha evolucionado para brindarnos los sistemas de comunicación más efectivos, como la comunicación por satélite, comunicaciones datalink (enlace de datos), los pilotos automáticos más avanzados, los sistemas de guía y gestión de vuelo. En efecto, parte de esta evolución, también son los sistemas que centralizan y monitorizan el resto de sistemas del avión, desde los motores, las luces de cabina o los trenes de aterrizaje, para proveer parámetros en tiempo real de los mismos, llamados sistemas centrales de Mantenimiento (CMC) o Health Monitoring, que permiten realizar en tiempo real un mantenimiento de la aeronave de manera predictiva y reactiva.
La evolución en la tecnología ha sido en gran parte un aliado para mejorar los procedimientos y la seguridad en los vuelos, sobre todo en los aspectos de navegación, control y localización de la aeronave. Finalmente podemos decir existen factores claves en los que la tecnología ha jugado un papel importante, como la mejor información meteorológica en tiempo real o poder visualizar las trayectorias de aeronaves que vuelan a nuestro alrededor con sistemas como TCAS o ADS, donde también se ha incluido el uso de fibra óptica a bordo, mejorando y reduciendo la cantidad de cable de cobre o coaxial necesario a bordo.
